A Guide to Making Orgonite

Optional Shungite & Quartz Sand

Shungite and quartz sand are optional additions rather than a requirement.

Yvonne regularly mixes shungite and a small pinch of quartz sand into the metal shavings before pouring the resin.

Within Yvonne's method, shungite is included because of its traditional association with protection, while the quartz sand is used as an additional quartz component alongside the main crystal.

These materials are not required to make orgonite and should be presented as part of Yvonne's personal construction method rather than a True Orgonite rule.

Copper Wire Around the Main Crystal

The copper wire listed in the materials can also be used to wrap or twist around the main quartz crystal before it is positioned in the piece.

Yvonne often uses copper wire around the crystal as part of the internal construction and design.

The exact number of turns, direction and style of wrapping can vary depending on the creator and the piece being made.

Optional: Shungite and a pinch of quartz sand may be mixed through the metal shavings. Copper wire may be twisted or wrapped around the main quartz crystal before casting.

Understanding Metal Distribution in an Orgonite Pyramid

One of the most important points when assessing an orgonite pyramid is that the visible height of the metal layer does not tell you the percentage of metal in the finished piece.

Because a pyramid becomes progressively wider towards its base, the majority of its volume is contained in the lower section. This means a pyramid can have a relatively large clear area at the top while still leaving substantial volume for a metal-rich orgonite body below.

Worked Example: 15 × 15 × 15 cm Pyramid

A square pyramid measuring 15 × 15 cm at the base and 15 cm high has a total internal volume of approximately:

1,125 ml

Clear Top – Upper One-Third

If the upper 5 cm, or one-third of the pyramid's height, is left clear, this section is itself a much smaller pyramid.

Its volume is only approximately:

41.7 ml

That represents just 3.7% of the entire pyramid volume.

So although one-third of the pyramid's height appears clear, more than 96% of its volume remains below it.

Clear Top – Half the Pyramid Height

Even if the clear section extends halfway down the pyramid to 7.5 cm, its volume is only approximately:

140.6 ml

That is just 12.5% of the total pyramid volume.

This demonstrates how misleading it can be to judge metal content by looking at the height of the clear section alone.

The Clear Bottom Finishing Layer

Yvonne also normally finishes the base with approximately 0.5 cm of clear or coloured resin.

This serves a practical purpose:

  • It covers metal that may otherwise protrude from the base.
  • It seals the construction.
  • It creates a cleaner, smoother finished surface.

Because this thin layer sits at the widest part of the pyramid, it contains considerably more resin than a similar-looking section near the tip.

For a 15 cm pyramid, a 0.5 cm bottom layer contains approximately 108.8 ml.

What Does That Leave for the Main Orgonite Body?

With a 5 cm clear top and 0.5 cm clear bottom layer:

Clear sections: approximately 150 ml
Main construction: approximately 975 ml
Main body: approximately 86.6% of the total pyramid volume

With the clear top extending halfway down the pyramid:

Clear sections: approximately 249 ml
Main construction: approximately 876 ml
Main body: approximately 77.8% of the total volume

Why This Matters for the True Orgonite Standard

The important measurement is therefore the actual quantity of metal within the finished pyramid, not simply how much of its height appears metallic.

A pyramid does not need to look 50% metal from the outside or have metal covering 50% of its vertical height to potentially achieve a high overall metal content.

However, having enough space available for metal is not the same as actually containing 50% metal.

For example, if half of our 15 cm pyramid is left clear at the top and a 0.5 cm finishing layer is used at the bottom, approximately 876 ml remains for the main orgonite construction.

To achieve 50% metal by volume across the entire 1,125 ml finished pyramid, the piece would require approximately:

562.5 ml of metal

This means the remaining 876 ml construction section would need to contain roughly 64% metal by volume, with the balance consisting of resin, quartz and any additional materials.

The Key Principle

Do not judge an orgonite pyramid's metal content by the height of the visible metal layer.

Instead, consider:

Total pyramid volume → clear sections → metal-bearing volume → actual quantity of metal used.

This gives a much more meaningful way of assessing construction against the True Orgonite minimum 50% metal guideline.

A clear tip can remain an important part of the artistic design, and a thin clear base can provide a professional finish, while the much larger lower body provides the space required for a dense metal, resin and quartz construction.
